Design Alumnae Serve on UMAA Collegiate Council

Three College of Design alumnae—Janice Linster (BS ’83 Interior Design), Maureen Kostial (BS ’71 Costume Design), and Betsy Vohs (M.Arch ’04)—have been appointed to the University of Minnesota Alumni Association Collegiate Alumni Council.

Members of the collegiate council advise the UMAA board on alumni engagement and advocate for the needs of the alumni societies they represent.

Janice Linster, owner of Studio Hive, was a founding member of the Design Alumni Society and Design Student and Alumni Board. She served on the Design Student and Alumni Board from 2006 to 2010, including a term as the Design Alumni Society President in 2008–09, during which she lead the creation of the signature program Design in 7: 7 Stories, 7 Minutes. This June she completed five years of service on the University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA) National Board (2011-2016), including three years as chair of the collegiate council. Janice was recognized with the University of Minnesota Alumni Service Award in 2009, the highest honor recognizing alumni volunteers.

Maureen Kostial, independent design consultant and retired partner/VP of Design for PM&J LLC, served on the Design Student and Alumni Board from 2011 to 2015 including a term as Design Alumni Society President in  2013–14, when she lead the creation of the community service signature program, Design Forward. She has served as a member of the UMAA collegiate council since 2014. This year she completed her her first year of service on the UMAA national board and will serve as co-chair of the Collegiate Council in 2016-17.

Betsy Vohs, owner of Studio BV, has served on the Design Student and Alumni Board since 2013 including a term as the Design Alumni Society President in 2015-16, during which she lead the creation of their sponsorship program, supporting support mentoring and college to career programs for Design students. She has served as a member of the UMAA Collegiate Council since 2015.

The University of Minnesota’s Alumni Association Awards are presented each fall to recognize outstanding alumni and alumni networks across the University of Minnesota.

For the second year in a row, an alumnus from the College of Design will receive the University of Minnesota Alumni Association’s U40 Award.

Now in its 26th year, the College of Design’s annual Mentor Program helps junior, senior, and graduate students grow professionally by matching them with a mentor in their field of study.
