Established in 1976, and named in honor of the Goldstein sisters, The Goldstein Museum of Design (GMD) is a research center in the College of Design and the only design museum in the Upper Midwest. Through our teaching collection of 36,000+ multidisciplinary objects and free, public exhibitions on the St. Paul and East Bank campuses, we advance learning in design history and practice for students and the greater community.

LEGACY

Founded to honor Harriet and Vetta Goldstein, pioneering educators who taught design at the University of Minnesota from 1910 to 1949. Their book "Art in Everyday Life" revolutionized how we think about design's role in daily living. 

Today, we continue their vision with over 36,000 objects spanning centuries of fashion, textiles, and decorative arts—making us one of the nation's premier design resources.

EDUCATION

GMD educational offerings include object-based teaching, lectures, hands-on activities, tours, and other engagements with K-12, university, and community groups. These are in addition to regular public programming and events in conjunction with exhibitions. Contact us to discuss class support, field trips, group visits, or collections research requests (at least two weeks in advance).
