The College of Design Honors & Awards provides an opportunity to recognize the outstanding work and achievements of our faculty, staff, and students. The Honors & Awards use an open nomination process, which means anyone can nominate anyone else for an award.

Student-Driven Teaching Appreciation Award

Nomination Deadline March 1

Recognizes individuals who have made contributions to teaching that are creative, innovative and/or effective through undergraduate or graduate programs.

Successful nominee will demonstrate evidence of:

  • Innovative and effective teaching in the context of their field
  • Continual effort to be an outstanding teacher
  • Ability to create inclusive learning environments that inspire intellectual curiosity and encourage diverse viewpoints
  • Stimulating students’ intellectual growth, critical thinking, and personal development
  • Ability to incorporate research and/or practice into teaching
  • Innovative incorporation of technology in teaching

Teaching Appreciation Awards

Recognizes individuals who have made contributions to teaching that are creative, innovative and/or effective through undergraduate or graduate programs.

Particular attention will be paid to the innovative methods instructors have employed to effectively teach the varied subjects that the College of Design offers.

Successful nominee will demonstrate evidence of:

  • Innovative and effective teaching in the context of their field
  • Continual effort to be an outstanding teacher
  • Ability to create inclusive learning environments that inspire intellectual curiosity and encourage diverse viewpoints
  • Stimulating students’ intellectual growth, critical thinking, and personal development
  • Ability to incorporate research and/or practice into teaching

Environmental Action Award

Nomination Deadline March 22

Recognizes innovations by individuals and/or teams within or across disciplines that have addressed environmental health.

Successful nominees will demonstrate evidence of one or more of the following:

  • Creating work or change under any of the following umbrellas: Circular economies, biophilic design, bio-inspired design, regenerative design, climate change, environmental resilience, or related topics
  • Conducting investigations that foster sustainable design across a variety of scales and materials (e.g., products, apparel, retailing, graphics, human factors and ergonomics, user experience, interiors, buildings, urban designs, landscapes, systems, networks, etc.)
  • Demonstrating methods of designing in harmony with the natural world and environmental forces
  • Accomplishments, leadership, or service in support of sustainability that have affected policy or systems change

Outstanding Contributions to Equity and Diversity Award

Recognizes individuals and/or teams who have made outstanding contributions to enhancing equity, diversity, and justice in the College and/or the community.

Successful nominees will demonstrate evidence of one or more of the following:

  • Accomplishments, leadership, or service in support of equity and justice enhancement that have affected policy or effected cultural change
  • Creating a supportive environment that honors and supports equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice
  • Recruiting, retaining, supporting, and/or graduating faculty, staff, or students from communities that have been historically under-invested in
  • Creating or improving social, educational, or curricular activities in support of inclusion and justice that benefit the college and/or the community

Outstanding Outreach Award

Recognizes outreach, engagement, or disciplinary service scholarship that has addressed the world's critical civic, economic, environmental, health, and social needs.

Successful nominees should demonstrate evidence of:

  • Applying knowledge to address a critical community problem or need
  • The ability to link research, discovery, or the creative process and teaching scholarship to the engagement effort
  • Impact on the people of Minnesota, the nation, or the world through improved skills, policies, or professional practice
  • The ability to work collaboratively with community partners
  • Excellence in leadership to effect change

Outstanding Research and/or Creative Scholarship Award

Nomination Deadline March 22

Recognizes research and/or creative scholarship by individuals and/or teams within or across disciplines that have contributed to new knowledge and understandings within one or more of the programs in the College of Design.        

Successful nominees should demonstrate evidence of:

  • Significant contributions to the discovery of new knowledge and/or the advancement of innovative approaches to creative work in the field, as evaluated by peers and recognized nationally and internationally
  • Use of innovations, new developments, practices, techniques, and/or ethical methods in discovery that contribute to or can be applied to the solution of major advances or challenges in the field
  • Active support of new researchers or creative practitioners (junior faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students)

Outstanding Staff Awards

Nomination Deadline March 22

Recognizes two staff members who have demonstrated excellence and professionalism in their overall performance and who have made meaningful contributions to their unit and/or the College and University. 

Successful nominees should demonstrate evidence of:

  • Excellence in leadership, innovative ideas, and/or problem-solving abilities
  • Excellence in their positions while promoting and supporting the work of their unit(s) and/or the College of Design
  • High professional standards

Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leadership Award

Nomination Deadline March 22

Recognizes exceptional leadership and academic accomplishments of current undergraduate students in the College of Design.

Successful nominees should demonstrate evidence of:

  • Providing leadership to the college and/or community
  • Heightening awareness and understanding of their discipline in the university and/or society
  • Making a positive difference in the lives of individuals, the community, the college, its professions, or the interaction between them

Outstanding Graduate Student Leadership Awards

Nomination Deadline March 22

Recognizes exceptional leadership and academic accomplishments of one (1) Master’s track graduate student (includes Professional Master’s degree students), and one (1) PhD track graduate student in the College of Design.

Successful nominees should demonstrate evidence of:

  • Providing leadership to the college and/or community.
  • Heightening awareness and understanding of their academic discipline in the university and/or society.
  • Service or support that makes a positive difference in the lives of individuals, the community, the college, its professions, or the interaction between them.

Outstanding Team Service Award

Recognizes faculty, staff, and students for teamwork that advances the mission and goals of their unit(s) and/or the College of Design.

Successful nominees will demonstrate evidence of:

  • Work that could not have been accomplished by an individual alone
  • Successful working relationships between team members
  • A work product that demonstrates the betterment of the College of Design or one of its units.
