Artistic traditions throughout history inspire contemporary artists, forming and transforming a hybrid of creativity that can be seen beautifully displayed in the work of designer Solveig Hisdal. Hisdal, the principle designer for the Norwegian knitting mill Oleana A/S, translated inspiration from textile patterns and material combinations presented in old folk costumes into richly colored and patterned knitwear. As a child Hisdal would frequent the dark halls of museums and become fascinated with “the atmosphere that old things create.” She said, “My goal is not to make copies of old-fashioned costumes, but rather contemporary garments with the essence of the past.”
