The Minnesota Sustainable Housing Initiative (MNSHI) is a web-based portal for information and research conducted by the Center for Sustainable Building Research, with funding provided by the McKnight Foundation. It aims to inform and support the creation of affordable, healthy, durable, and resource and energy efficient homes throughout the state and region.

The multifamily housing prototype study aims to use energy models to help develop a set of recommendations and specifications for affordable housing providers seeking to develop net zero site energy projects. Three different project scales (i.e. prototypes) will be investigated: mid-rise (5 stories), low-rise (3-stories), and townhomes. It is expected that the building enclosure, lighting, and mechanical system specifications will vary greatly to enable net zero performance at each scale. This study was begun in 2016 and is currently underway.
