ABOUT THE PROJECT

The hockey community, especially in terms of equipment, is incredibly dynamic and innovative. Able-bodied hockey players have access to gear that is constantly addressing their needs and pain points. The same cannot be said of their fellow athletes with disabilities. Erik Jamison-Ekeling wanted to make a more independent and empowering rink entrance experience for sled hockey players with their product The Assist.

They conducted research with sled hockey players and discovered that a device that was easy to attach and exit from would be best. The device features a blade guard to keep the sled in place for stability, blade slots for comfortability based on skill level, metal picks on the tread to grip ice/rubber while in use, and grips on both sides for easy handling while wearing hockey gloves.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Students synthesize and apply design and research techniques to a senior capstone project. Projects can be student-directed or client-sponsored and are intended to demonstrate competency in fundamental design skills, communicating and documenting design processes, and the ability to apply design processes to develop new products and services while addressing real-world constraints. These are individual, self-directed design projects.
