ABOUT THE PROJECT

Stratified connects proposes a new typology throughout Waikīkī that is inspired from the past interrelated relationship between kanaka (human being) and ‘āina (the land) known as the ahupua‘a system, a system that maintained the biocultural diversity of place. Biocultural restoration acts to restore the interrelationships between people and place which manifests biologically, culturally, and linguistically. With sea level rise projected to increase 3.2 ft by 2100 and majority of the infrastructure under water, this project dives into the restoration back to Waikīkī’s roots– sprouting waters. Although we cannot restore to what once was, we can envision what could be with the guidance from the past and knowledge from the present to create a more sustainable future.
