ABOUT THE PROJECT

Following the industrial boom and bust in Detroit the Belle Isle Zoo was left abandoned in 2002 and, like so many other buildings in the city, were left to deteriorate and let nature take its course. In this project the abandoned structures and overgrown vegetation are embraced to create vital habitat spaces and structures for three key species impacted the most by industrial development: the Eastern Red Bat, Blanding’s Turtle, and Mudpuppy.
