Creating a More Resilient 911 System

A golden 'M' on a maroon flag

The Minnesota Design Center received a Stage 1 CIVIC Innovation grant from the National Science Foundation, in partnership with the College of Science and Engineering, Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis, to redesign the 911 emergency response system. MDC Director Tom Fisher is the co-principal investigator along with professor Saif Benjaafar in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. The Stage 1 grant supports the planning necessary to prepare a Stage 2 implementation grant proposal, which will focus on developing a more resilient 911 system, better prepared to handle emergencies that require nuanced responses or that involve large numbers of callers.
