Community-Based Rural Transit

A golden 'M' on a maroon flag

The Minnesota Design Center has received a Minnesota Department of Transportation grant to develop a sharing economy approach to rural transit, with a team that includes Tom Fisher, Mary Vogel and Fernando Burga from the MDC. We will work with the city of Wabasha and will look at ways to leverage the many vehicles—cars, vans, school buses—that sit parked most of the time in a network that can offer on-demand trips for people without transportation, provide income for those who own these vehicles, and generate the necessary match to state transit funds. We will be doing a lot of engagement as part of this project, especially with underserved communities in and around Wabasha.
