Welcome! On this page, you'll find important information about application deadlines, admission factors and criteria, and how to apply. Be sure to explore all links for information about transferring credit and important details about what it means to be a transfer student in our programs. Deadlines

 

Spring 2015: ALL CDes majors are accepting transfer applications for spring term except architecture bachelor of science (B.S.). Please note that while the programs admit for spring, studio sequencing for Pre-Architecture, Pre-Apparel, and Pre-Interior Design only begin in the fall term.

 

Final Deadline - December 1, 2014 Applications are still being considered on a space available basis until December 1. If you have questions about space remaining in a program, please contact Melodie Bard at mtbard@umn.edu or 612-625-5098.

 

U of M students applying to the architecture BDA are held to the December 1 deadline. As BDA application review requires final Fall grades, admission decisions will go out in early January.

 

 

Fall 2015: ALL CDes majors are accepting transfer applications for fall term.

 

Priority Deadline - March 2, 2015. Applications are reviewed on a space available basis after this deadline. There is a chance a major may fill after reviewing the applications submitted by the priority deadline so you are encouraged to get your application in by this date.

 

 

Final Deadline - May 15, 2015

 

U of M students applying to the architecture BDA are held to the May 15, 2015 deadline. Students applying to the Arch BS have until May 31 to submit their admissions materials online.

Please note that the Visit Office is only for a Minneapolis or St. Paul full campus tour. Be sure to also contact Melodie Bard directly if you'd also like to set up a visit specifically with the College of Design.

 

 

Application Materials

 

Transferring as a degree-seeking student from outside the U of M system (including from CCE).

Changing colleges or campuses within the U of M system, please submit the Change of College/Campus form to any Onestop Service Center:

Changing majors within CDes (including to the Arch BDA or BA). If you are changing majors within CLA to the Arch BA, please submit the following application to 107 Rapson Hall:

 

Admission Factors

 

The following transfer admission factors are considered in the review of transfer applications:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00; preferred minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80.
  • Grade patterns over time - overall GPA, term GPA, and number of withdrawals.
  • Presence of any major-related courses and grades in those courses.
  • An especially challenging pattern of coursework.
  • If fewer than 26 college credits completed at the time of application high school record and test scores will be considered for review
  • Space in the major. Note: some majors are more competitive than others.
  • Retail Merchandising and Pre Architecture Applicants: Students are strongly encouraged to successfully complete college algebra if applying to the Retail Merchandising major or college calculus if applying to the Pre Architecture program.
  • Space left in the major.
  • Extenuating circumstances: Please explain any grades or academic patterns in a letter of circumstance submitted with your admissions application. Include information about why you are a good fit for the major to which you are applying.

Students transferring from outside the U of M (or CCE non-degree) will be notified by postal mail. Students transferring from within the U of M system will be notified via EMAIL to their U of M email account. If you don't remember how to access your U of M email account call 612-301-4357.

 

 

Transfer Scholarships

 

College of Design domestic transfer students are automatically considered for a transfer scholarship based on an overall assessment of their admissions application. International students are automatically considered for the Global Excellence Scholarship based on an overall assessment of their admissions application. Students will be notified by mail if they are offered a scholarship.
