New Students

Welcome to the College of Design!

To help you prepare for registering for your first term in the College of Design, please review thoroughly...

  • the information below and
  • our New Student Advising page, where you will find major-specific information.

Note: There is no on-campus orientation for students transferring to the College of Design from within the U of M system.

Your major requirements and tracking your degree progress:

The four-year plan for your major indicates which courses you need to take and when. It works together with the APAS report, which is an online checklist of the degree requirements you have (not) completed. It is your responsibility to monitor your APAS report in order to track your degree progress. If you're not already familiar with APAS, learn about it and view a tutorial here.

CDes will update your APAS as soon as possible following your admission notification. This may take up to 5 business days. If you'd like to see how your classes transfer to your CDes major prior to that, generate a "What If" version of your APAS.

Advising in the College of Design:

Many of your questions at this point will be answered by the information on this page and our New Student Advising page. Please review them before connecting with your academic advisor.

Review of transfer courses for your major:

To submit transfer studio courses for review to see if they will fulfill any of your major requirements (as opposed to the liberal education requirements), contact Design Transfer Admissions promptly at 612-626-3690 or DesTrsfr@umn.edu. We will instruct you how to upload your work for faculty review to determine transferability.

Notes: 1) It is not common for faculty to approve transfer courses to meet upper-division major requirements. 2) Non-studio based major courses may be petitioned through your academic advisor once you begin your courses in the College of Design.

Information for system campus transfer students and students who have been away from the U of M for more than 1-2 semesters:

To assist you in preparing for registration and orienting yourself to the U of M Twin Cities (UMTC) campus, please consider the following.

  • You will need to set up a UMTC e-mail address in order to register. For assistance with this, contact Technology Help.

  • Review the online orientation when it becomes available for the coming term. (Note: This tutorial was designed for students transfering from outside ofthe U of M system, so some of the information may be familiar to you. It covers many UMTC resources, programs, and services that are relevant to students transfering from a system campus as well as those who may be returning to UMTC after time away from college.)

  • After you have changed your email to a UMTC email address, click here to find your registration time as well as links to helpful registration information.

  • Get your U Card if you don't already have one from your campus.

  • Review the CDes Computer Standards. This includes recommendation on hardware specs as well as requirements for certain CDes majors.

  • Review maps for the Twin Cities Campus -- East Bank, West Bank and St. Paul.
