Applying for Admission
Any student with a U.S. bachelor's degree or a comparable foreign degree from a recognized college or university may apply to the Graduate School. Applicants should have:
- necessary background for their chosen major field
- excellent scholastic record from an approved college or university
- appropriate professional qualifications
These applicants may be admitted for graduate work on recommendation of the graduate faculty in the proposed major field and approval of the Graduate School dean.
The Graduate School standard for admission is an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.00. Because many programs require a higher GPA, consult the program to which you're applying for specific information about admission standards.
Application Materials
Request application materials from one of the CDes department program offices listed above. Please specify:
- applicant's proposed major field and emphasis
- degree objective
- date of proposed entry
Applicants may also apply online.
Apply for admission well in advance of the term graduate study is to begin (but no more than one year before desired entry date). Many programs have established application deadlines earlier than the Graduate School's deadlines or may admit applicants only once during the academic year. Departments may also require additional application and supporting materials. Applicants are responsible for obtaining complete and accurate information about deadlines and requirements from the Director of Graduate Studies for their proposed major.
Applicants submit two sets of completed applications -- one to the individual Department and one to the Graduate School.
What to Submit to the Department
Consult the Graduate Handbook of the appropriate department for specific instructions. Most programs require:
- submission of a separate departmental application
- a statement of purpose
- letters of recommendation
- some programs require additional materials
Visiting Scholars, post-doctoral degree -- contact the department for information and application materials.
