Students, Alumni & Professionals Come Together for Retail Connect

College of Design students, alumni and retail professionals came together for our annual Retail Connect event. This year's gathering, titled Going Mobile, Getting Social... Shopping with Today's Consumers, featured marketing professionals and executives from Best Buy and Kohl's. They shared examples of what their organizations have been doing online, including what's worked, what hasn't, and what's next. Full story


U of M College of Design's DigiFabLab Officially Opens

Friday, Oct. 14, marked the official grand opening of the College of Design's Digital Fabrication Lab, or DigiFabLab - a state-of-the-art digital prototyping and fabrication facility. The DigiFabLab allows students to explore additive and subtractive prototyping and manufacturing technologies, and includes 3D printers, laser cutting systems and CNC milling equipment. It is located in Rapson Hall, on the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus. Full story

Context and Intuition: Modern, Public, Local Space

Hasan Çalışlar and Kerem Erginoğlu founded Istanbul-based Erginoğlu & Çalışlar Architects in 1993. The firm specializes in urban planning, architecture, and interior design with a diverse portfolio of national and international projects including an adaptive re-use design of a former salt repository in Istanbul's industrical Kasimpaşa neighborhood, which received the New & Old Award at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona in 2010.

"Keeping the customer in mind" by Suzy Frisch and Kim Johnson, Ph.D., leads the retail merchandising program the way successful retailers would -- by keeping the customer in mind. For Johnson, that customer is the student who needs a strong background in all aspects of retailing before graduation. So when the Department of Design, Housing, and Apparel became part of the new College of Design three years ago, Johnson took the opportunity to strengthen the retail program.

Retailers take note: it matters a lot to shoppes what your employees wear and how they present themselves. It can even go so far as to shape consumers' perceptions of a store and the credibility of its sales staff. New emerging research found that more than 80 percent of shoppers experienced feelings while in a store and their perceptions of a store were connected to sales associates' appearance, including clothes, accessories, and grooming.

New faculty member Juanjuan Wu exudes enthusiasm for her work in retail merchandising. Raised in China, Wu received her M.A. from Donghua University in Shanghai. She became a fashion journalist and editor, working for Metropolis, one of the hottest fashion magazines in China, and also wrote for many other popular fashion magazines and national newspapers, such as Shanghai Style, Fashion, China Fashion Weekly, and Shanghai Fashion Times. She later became marketing director for 5th Street Jeans, promoting the product to the media and developing brand marketing plans and strategies.
