As the family moving into the Net Zero Energy house prepares for life in their new home, KSTP-TV takes a tour with the owner.

Last night was the dedication ceremony for the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity Net Zero Energy home, designed and built in partnership with School of Architecture students and faculty at the University of Minnesota College of Design. The project was made possible, in part, due to the generous support of everyone who contributed to our Gift of Shelter campaign in November and December 2012.

Sarah Olson and Abdi Mohamed are the homebuyers moving into the Net Zero Energy Home. In it, they will be raising their four-year-old twins, Jamal and Sofia. Their six-year-old nephew, Yahya, will also be living with the family.

WCCO-TV was on site for the dedication.

Construction is underway at the Net Zero Energy Home! The project is located in the Hawthorne Ecovillage of Minneapolis and is scheduled to be finished in the fall of 2013.

Because of overwhelming support from alumni and friends like you, our students will begin their Habitat for Humanity projects with the fullest possible resources.

You've given our students a unique opportunity. Next semester, they will gain hands-on experience addressing the basic human need for safe, affordable, and accessible housing. Thank you for giving the Gift of Shelter. We will be sure to keep you updated as our students start the design process.

In the meantime, stay connected with us at
design.umn.edu, on Facebook, and Twitter. If you missed the chance to give, you can still contribute at z.umn.edu/giftofshelter. Thank you for all you do.

Warm wishes for the holidays,

Today's the day. Will you help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 for student projects with Habitat for Humanity? We know you stand with us in support of socially responsible design, sustainability, and super-efficient housing. Now is the time to show your commitment. Show our students you value their work and you believe everyone should have access to safe and affordable housing.

Help us reach our goal of $10,000 TODAY by Giving the Gift of Shelter.

We're just two days away from our goal! Here's a message from the Center for Sustainable Building Research fellow Dan Handeen, who is leading the Habitat for Humanity projects next semester:

"Students in the net zero classes will be partnering with students in the Housing Development and Management class taught by Lyn Bruin and Becky Yust. Working in teams, the housing students will provide valuable insight into the management, budgeting, and socio-demographic aspects of affordable housing. Meanwhile, the ARCH students will be clarifying the differences that super-efficient structures have on design process, project cost, and lifestyle.

We are excited to expand the scope of the project, since a multi-family project presents new design opportunities and design challenges beyond the single-family homes that the students have designed in the past. I hope you can share with our community how unique it is to have the chance to blend disciplines like this. The extra support is truly what makes these classes possible, and it is vital to our engagement in Minnesota, the region, and in the design community."

Thank you to everyone who has given so far!

Your gift builds on the commitment fellow alumni and friends have made to support community partnerships and socially responsible design. Last year, donors like you contributed $10,000 to sustain our projects with Habitat for Humanity ranging from student work with the Global Village Project, to Habitat ReStores, to the design of super-efficient Net Zero structures in North Minneapolis. This year, we're doing it again - and we're doing more.

>> Update: November 26, 2012

Next semester, students from two of our program areas - Architecture and Housing Studies - will collaborate with Habitat for Humanity on designs for new multifamily housing units in Fridley, MN. We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Habitat, but we need your help.

To fully realize these projects, we need to raise $10,000 by Friday, December 7!

Your gift will help cover the cost of materials for these students, lightening their financial burden and ensuring they get hands-on experience addressing the basic human need for safe, affordable, accessible housing.

With your help, our students will work across disciplines in new ways, deepening their practical knowledge, and solving some of today's most pressing problems. Give a gift that opens doors - for our students, and for the  families who will call their projects home.

This holiday, please show your support and give the gift of shelter.
