Metropolitan Design Center Image Bank

The Metropolitan Design Center Image Bank has moved to the University
of Minnesota Digital Content Library (DCL). We will update our tip
sheets soon, once we get more user data.

The Digital Content Library (DCL) is a combined resource of the
College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and the College of Design (CDes).
Together, there are over 150,000 learning objects from many different
disciplines in image, video, and audio formats. These objects come
from a variety of sources including purchased and licensed, donations,
and copystand photography.

There are many collections of images in the DCL. You can still search
the Metropolitan Design Center Image Bank collection specifically by:

  • Select the "Advanced Search" on the DCL homepage
  • Select "Metropolitan Design Center" from the Collections
  • This is easiest if you click "Unselect All" first.

Most people will have success searching for images using the "Location" and "Keywords" fields.

If you need a larger image than is available online, please contact
the DCL directly by emailing dcl@umn.edu.

Limited Copyright Permission and Statement of Fair Use

The Metropolitan Design Center welcomes use of these images and grants
limited permission for their use without request; except for
publications with circulation over 1,000 copies, publications that
include over six images, and uses where royalties are received, and
for such uses, we ask that our office be contacted for permission
terms. In general, we will gladly grant it. Please include the
accession number(s) of the image(s) you would like to use with your
request.

All uses must include a credit placed on the same page as the image.
For images with a Design Center copyright use: "(c) Regents of the
University of Minnesota. Used with the permission of Metropolitan
Design Center." For images in the Special Collections whose copyright
is held by others use: "(c)[name of copyright holder]. Used with
permission." When images are used in digital presentations, such as
PowerPoint, this credit must appear on the same slide as the image.
For all use as part of printed materials, the Design Center requests
two copies of any materials thus produced. For all non-printed uses,
please e-mail the Design Center imgbank@umn.edu to inform us of the
use.
