2010 Metropolitan Design Center Undergraduate Travel Scholarships

Deadline:  Wednesday, February 24, 2010, 4:30 p.m.
The 2010 Metropolitan Design Center Undergraduate Travel Scholarships will provide up to two undergraduate students in the College of Design the opportunity for self-directed travel abroad.  The scholarships are sponsored by the College of Design Metropolitan Design Center with the conviction that exposure to other cultures is essential for reflecting on our own.    Applicants will identify an urban design issue of concern to the Twin Cities metropolitan area.  Possible issues for the Scholarship include, but are not limited to, waterfront development, homelessness, open space, public transportation, suburbanization, green infrastructure and affordable housing.

3rd Annual fine Art Finals Midwest Regional Scholarship Competition

Entry deadline:  Friday, November 20, 2009

Media accepted include:  drawing, sculpture, photography, painting, jewelry, printmaking, fibers, digital art, graphic design.

AIA Facebook Young Designers Challenge

Deadline: December 11, 2009

The AIA is hosting its first ever design competition on Facebook—the AIA Facebook Young Designers Challenge. The competition is targeting emerging professionals, and is open to all AIAS members, all Assoc. AIA members, and all AIA young architect members.

ARLIS/NA, the Art Libraries Society of North America, is seeking design submissions for the cover of its official publication.

Third Annual Flux Student Design Competition

Entry Deadline: Friday, September 25, 2009, 11:59pm EST

Reception: Saturday, October 24, 2009

Entries must be school projects, freelance, or pro bono work created between August 2007 and October 2008. The competition has five categories: Posters, Packaging, Publications, Identity, and Web/Interactive. Winning work will be displayed at The Blue Elephant Art Center in Frederick, MD.

3M Student Design Competition

Kick-off Meeting: Monday, September 21, 12 noon - 1 p.m., 225 Rapson Hall

Deadlines: The Phase 1 deadline is 5:00 pm on Wednesday, October 7.The Phase 2 deadline is 5:00 pm on Friday, October 23.

Energy consumption and related climate change concerns have led to increased scrutiny related to artificial illumination in buildings. At the same time, new lighting technologies have broadened the scope of possibilities demonstrated by the lighting designer’s palette. 3M engineers have developed a wide array of films with advanced light-propagating properties, and these materials could potentially inspire a new generation of energy-efficient lighting sources.

Challenge: Design a light fixture that will provide functionality as a task light or feature light. Your design should consider issues related to sustainability, emerging technologies, and socio-behavioral implications. Creative and unusual solutions will be given priority.

Eligibility: All undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Design are invited to participate.

New Designer Fashion Grand Prix

Applications accepted June 1, 2009- June 26, 2009

This competition is for new fashion designers, competing for training and business support towards becoming an independent designer. Submissions of drawings should be for creations that are wearable, original, and previously unrealeased to the public. Judging will be based on the designer's ability to express a theme, originality, and overall workmanship.

The Metropolitan Design Center Summer Student Travel Fellowship

Application Deadline: February 25, 2009

The award will provide up to two students the opportunity for self-directed travel abroad. For selection criteria and further information, please visit the MDC website.

UCAN Competition

Enrollment Application Deadline: December 31, 2008

A new international design competition is being offered as a UMN course (CE 5180) in Spring 2009. This year, the challenge is to develop a sustainable solution for reuse and/or recycling of water in a large city slum in India. The winning team will receive funding to travel to India in Summer 2009 to implement their idea.

Fine Art Finals- Midwest Scholarship Competition

This scholarship competition is dedicated to the promotion of talented emerging artists and awards their mastery of technique and excellence of artistic achievement. Carbon Buster Awards

Entry Deadline: May 9, 2008

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar is presenting Carbon Buster Awards to Minnesotans making a difference in reducing global climate change. Carbon Buster Awards of Excellence will be presented to the top entries in two categories: essay and multimedia.

2008 Metropolis Next Generation Design Competition

Entry deadline: January 4, 2008

The designer or team whose idea is judged most innovative and practical for making the most efficient, life/environment-enhancing use of precious and dwindling water resource will be awarded $10,000.

The Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Design Excellence 2008

Entry deadline: December 10, 2007

500 word essay on a topic important to the understanding of the interaction of people and the built world. The topic for 2008: Competing to Serve.
