Advising Appointments

As a College of Design student, you have a professional academic adviser assigned to you who serves as the primary resource person during your academic career. Your adviser can help you in many ways, so be sure to connect with him/her on a regular basis.

Academic advisers offer individual appointments as well as weekly drop-in hours meant for 5-10 minute sessions. Use drop-in hours for:

  • Brief review of your current semester class schedule
  • Petition process discussions
  • Follow-up signatures for academic forms (after initial advising appointment)
  • Short Q & A's

When meeting with an adviser…

It’s your responsibility to:

  • Read and understand your APAS and your four-year plan, and ask your adviser if you have questions
  • Schedule appointments early and arrive on time
  • Stay current on collegiate and University policies, deadlines, and resources
  • Make satisfactory academic progress toward timely graduation
  • Make and be accountable for your own decisions about your academic life
  • Treat your adviser in a respectful, professional manner (which includes turning off your cell phone during appointments)

It’s your adviser’s responsibility to:

  • Advise you in a knowledgeable, professional, and respectful manner
  • Communicate to you pertinent collegiate and University information, including changes to your degree program
  • Allow you to make your own decisions about your academic life
  • Keep appropriate information about you confidential
